Down Jackets, Vests and Parka’s are a great investment for the winter and if you look after them they can last for years.

Below are some tips for washing your Down Jackets.

Down is tough stuff it has to be and though wet down has pretty much no insulation properties, getting it wet doesn’t hurt it in the least. Washing a down jacket is not much harder than washing a pair of jeans. (apart from the balls! which  we’ll explain about later)

There are 3 things you’ll need to wash your down jacket: down washing liquid, a front loading washing machine, and a dryer with a good low heat setting.

While you can use a normal mild detergent, they can strip away the natural oils in down and don’t always rinse out cleanly so we would  recommend using a down specific detergent something like; NikWax® Down Wash this works really well but there are loads of others on the market.

Choose the delicate programme on your washing machine, put the jacket and detergent in and away you go

After the Jacket has been washed and spun, remove it from the machine and give it a gentle shake to remove excess water.

Now comes the important part, the drying. Drying is a delicate businesss, high heat can ruin your down jacket but you need some heat or drying takes forever.

Put your jacket in the dryer with 2 clean tennis balls (that’s the balls bit).The balls will help the down to fluff as it dries.

Dry on low heat and check the jacket every 10 minutes to prevent overheating, make sure it is completely dry before removing, because down absorbs so much water it looks and feels dry long before it really is.
